Swiss CNC Machining
in Salt Lake City, UT

Salt Lake City has built things in volume since the copper era, and today the Wasatch Front turns out rocket motors, F-35 spares and disposable medical devices by the million. RivCut Swiss machines the catheter components, luer fittings, contact pins and slender shafts behind that output, holding tolerances to ±0.0001 inches on bar stock from 0.020 to 1.50 inches.

What Is Swiss CNC Machining?

Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.

1

Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing

The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.

2

Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis

Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.

3

Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining

Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.

A Century of Making Things Along the Wasatch Front

Manufacturing identity in Salt Lake City runs deeper than the Silicon Slopes branding. Kennecott's copper operation west of town has fed heavy industry for over a hundred years, the missile era planted Hill Air Force Base sustainment and Northrop Grumman's solid rocket motor production in Promontory. The last three decades added a genuine medical device cluster anchored by Merit Medical Systems in South Jordan, BioFire Diagnostics and Varex Imaging. Each wave left behind engineers who expect suppliers to hold a print.

What ties those eras together is an appetite for small turned parts at scale. Merit Medical's disposable cardiology and radiology devices consume machined hubs, luer fittings and cannulated components in six-figure annual volumes. Hill AFB depot work and L3Harris electronics generate steady demand for contact pins, connector bodies and mil-spec fasteners. Swiss turning fits both because the guide bushing supports the bar at the cutting point, so a 3 inch long 0.125 inch diameter pin comes off straight, concentric to 0.0002 inches TIR and finished near Ra 16 microinches without grinding.

RivCut runs that work from our Union City, California shop and ships it to Salt Lake City in about 2 to 3 business days by ground, with air freight available when a line-down situation cannot wait for the truck.

Engineered for Micro-Precision & High Volume

From single medical prototypes to automated 100,000+ piece production runs — built for zero defect manufacturing.

±0.0001" Micro Tolerance

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts

Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.

1. Precision Ground Bar Stock

Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.

2. Thread Relief Grooves

Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.

3. Corner Radii & Chamfers

Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.

Medical Devices & Diagnostics

The South Jordan to Salt Lake corridor is one of the densest disposable-device clusters in the Mountain West. Merit Medical's cardiology, radiology and endoscopy lines, BioFire's molecular diagnostic cartridges and Varex Imaging's X-ray tube assemblies all depend on small turned components with medical-grade finishes and full lot traceability. RivCut Swiss turns them from 316L, titanium, PEEK and 17-4 PH with material certs on every shipment, from first prototype through 100,000 piece bar-fed production.

Aerospace & Defense

Between Hill AFB's Ogden Air Logistics Complex maintaining F-35, F-16 and A-10 fleets, Northrop Grumman's strategic motor programs in Promontory and L3Harris electronics in Salt Lake City, the Wasatch Front carries some of the most demanding small-part specs in the country. Swiss lathes are the right tool for the connector pins, fuel fittings, standoffs and sensor housings inside that hardware. RivCut supports ITAR-controlled work with mil-spec documentation, first article reports and single-setup live tooling that keeps critical features concentric.

Mining & Industrial Equipment

Kennecott copper, Weir Minerals service centers and Parker Hannifin's hydraulic component plant in Ogden keep the region's fluid power and wear-part economy busy. Much of what fails in a slurry pump skid or a hydraulic manifold is small and turned: valve spools, gauge pins, grease fittings and precision bushings. RivCut machines replacements from 4140, 440C, 17-4 PH and bronze, often working from a worn sample and a sketch, so maintenance planners are not held hostage to OEM lead times.

Insider tip: If your part feeds a Hill AFB sustainment contract or a Merit Medical device line, say so in the RFQ notes. End-use flags get the right documentation package, ITAR handling or lot traceability attached to the first quote instead of surfacing as a requote after award.

Common Questions from Salt Lake City Teams

How Swiss turning, quoting and shipping work for Salt Lake City teams.

Yes. We turn luer fittings, catheter hubs, cannulated pins and electrode bodies from 316L, titanium and PEEK with the lot traceability and material certs device makers in the Merit Medical and BioFire supply chains expect, including first article inspection reports on request.
Standard machining runs 5 to 10 business days depending on material and quantity, then about 2 to 3 business days ground transit from our California shop to Utah. Air shipping and expedited machining are available when a depot schedule or clinical build cannot slip. Plan a small winter buffer, since inversion fog can slow I-15 freight in December through February.
We support ITAR-controlled manufacturing with mil-spec finishes and documentation suited to Hill AFB sustainment and prime supplier flowdowns. Flag the export control status on your RFQ and we route the job accordingly, with EN 10204 3.1 mill certs and AS9102-style first articles available.
Guide bushing support lets us hold diameters to ±0.0001 inches, concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR and surface finishes near Ra 16 microinches as machined. Length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 stay straight, which matters for slender shafts and long cannulated parts.
No minimum. University of Utah research groups and Silicon Slopes hardware startups order single prototypes, while established suppliers run bar-fed lots of 500 to 100,000 or more pieces. Per-piece pricing drops sharply once a job earns dedicated bar stock and unattended running.
Yes. Our Swiss lathes feature up to 12 axes with live tooling and sub-spindles. We can turn, cross-drill, mill flats, cut keyways, thread-whirl and finish the back side of parts in a single machine cycle.
Standard CNC lathes move the cutting tool along a stationary rotating workpiece, which can cause slender parts to flex. Swiss lathes move the bar stock through a stationary guide bushing, machining right next to the support point for zero deflection and higher aspect ratios over 20:1.
