What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
Where Provo Engineering Talent Meets Micro Turning
Start with the institutions. Brigham Young University graduates one of the larger engineering classes in the Mountain West, and Utah Valley University across the lake in Orem adds thousands more technicians and engineers every year. That talent pool is why Silicon Slopes stretched south from Lehi into Utah Valley, and why Provo produces so many hardware startups per square mile. A founder who leaves a BYU capstone lab with a working sensor prototype needs someone to turn the pins, ferrules and housings inside it at production tolerances, which is exactly the work a sliding headstock lathe exists to do.
The established employers shape demand from the other direction. Vivint builds smart home hardware at scale from its Provo headquarters, the Texas Instruments fab in Lehi anchors a semiconductor corridor twenty minutes up I-15 and aerospace and defense suppliers feeding Hill Air Force Base pull precision turned hardware from shops across the Wasatch Front. These buyers order in the hundreds to the tens of thousands, bar fed, with certs. Swiss turning covers both ends of that spectrum because the guide bushing supports the stock right at the tool, so piece 1 and piece 20,000 measure the same.
RivCut serves Provo from our Union City, California shop. Ground freight reaches Utah in 2 to 3 business days, and air shipping is available when a build cannot slip. Upload a STEP file, get a price in minutes and hold us to concentricity of 0.0002 inches TIR.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
Where Swiss Machining Fits in Provo
From prototypes to bar-fed production, this is Provo's Swiss workload.
Silicon Slopes Hardware & Consumer Electronics
Provo and Orem product companies, from Vivint scale smart home devices down to two person BYU spinouts, live on small turned interconnect and enclosure hardware. Contact pins, battery terminals, antenna standoffs, camera lens barrels and threaded inserts all fit Swiss lathe geometry under 1.5 inches in diameter. RivCut runs them in brass, 303 stainless and 6061 with live tooling, so flats, cross holes and wrench features come off in one setup instead of a second operation.
Semiconductor & Test Equipment
The Texas Instruments fab in Lehi and the equipment suppliers around it consume a steady diet of micro turned components: probe pins, vacuum fittings, gas line ferrules, alignment dowels and wafer handling hardware. This work punishes sloppy turning, since a probe pin that runs out 0.001 inches scraps die instead of testing them. Guide bushing support lets us hold concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR and finishes near Ra 16 microinches as machined in 316L, molybdenum alloys and PEEK.
Aerospace & Defense Suppliers
Utah's aerospace and defense economy centers on Hill Air Force Base and the sustainment and munitions contractors along the Wasatch Front, and Utah Valley shops feed that supply chain. Typical Swiss work includes clevis pins, fuel system fittings, valve spools, connector contacts and slender actuator shafts with length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1. RivCut turns them in 17-4 PH, 4140, titanium and 7075 with full material traceability, first article inspection reports and ITAR aware handling on request.
