What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
From First Article to Bar Fed Production for Fort Collins
Volume is the real question in Fort Collins purchasing. Woodward, headquartered in the city and building fuel and combustion control systems for aerospace and energy, sits at one end of the spectrum, where a qualified spool or metering pin reorders in the thousands per quarter. At the other end, the hardware startups that spin out of Colorado State University research need five pieces to prove a design before anyone commits tooling money. Swiss turning is one of the few processes that prices sanely at both ends, because once a bar is loaded and offsets are proven, piece 5,000 costs a fraction of piece 1.
The semiconductor side of town compounds that pattern. Broadcom's Fort Collins campus, a fab lineage that runs back through Avago and Agilent to HP, anchors a local base of equipment, test and RF suppliers who buy small turned hardware in steady volumes: gas fitting bodies, probe pins, ceramic seal ferrules and vacuum standoffs where concentricity and finish decide yield. A guide bushing supporting the bar at the cut point holds 0.0002 inches TIR on those geometries without a secondary grind.
RivCut serves all of it from our Union City, California shop, about 2 to 3 business days by ground to the Front Range, with air freight when a line down situation cannot wait. No minimum order, so the CSU spinout and the Woodward supplier get quoted from the same machines.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
Swiss Machining Demand Across Fort Collins
How demand for small turned parts breaks down across Fort Collins.
Aerospace & Energy Controls
Woodward's Fort Collins headquarters and its regional supplier network define the city's precision turning demand: fuel metering components, servo valve spools, nozzle fittings and sensor bodies where a diameter out by two tenths of a thousandth changes flow behavior. RivCut Swiss turns these from 17-4 PH, 303 and 15-5 stainless and titanium with concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR, live tooled cross features in one setup and AS9102 first article reports when the program calls for them.
Semiconductor & Electronics
Broadcom's wafer fab and the test and RF equipment shops around it consume the classic Swiss part family: gold plated contact pins, pogo probe barrels, coaxial ferrules, vacuum feedthrough standoffs and gas line fittings. These jobs reward bar fed economics, since a 20,000 piece pin order runs lights out once proven. We turn them from beryllium copper, brass, 316L and Kovar equivalents at Ra 16 microinch finishes as machined, with length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 on slender probe shafts.
Cleantech & Hardware Startups
Colorado State University's Powerhouse Energy Campus and the product companies clustered nearby, Otter Products among the best known, generate a constant stream of new device hardware: battery terminal pins, flow sensor bodies, threaded inserts, slender actuator shafts and custom standoffs. RivCut quotes these with no minimum, then holds the same print and process as quantities climb from prototype to pilot to production, so a Fort Collins team never requalifies a part just because the volume changed.
