What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
The Turned Parts York Manufacturers Order Most
Start with the part types, because they tell the story of York, PA better than any brochure. BAE Systems builds and upgrades armored combat vehicles here, and land systems work consumes turned hardware relentlessly: locating pins, hinge pins, hydraulic spools, electrical contact pins and Mil-spec fasteners, most of them under an inch in diameter and ordered in bar-fed quantities. Down the road, Harley-Davidson's York Vehicle Operations assembles motorcycles whose supplier network buys shoulder bolts, bushings, brake fittings and slender chromoly shafts to the same discipline.
The industrial side of York County adds a second stream of demand. Johnson Controls carries the York brand of chillers and rooftop HVAC units forward, Voith Hydro engineers turbine and generator packages from its US headquarters in town, and both worlds run on small precision components: orifice fittings, thermowell bodies, servo valve spools and instrumentation standoffs. Swiss turning fits this mix because the guide bushing supports the bar at the point of cut, so a long thin part comes off straight, concentric to 0.0002 inches TIR and finished near Ra 16 microinches without a grinding operation.
RivCut serves York from Union City, California. Distance matters less than buyers expect. Bar-fed runs from 500 to 100,000 pieces ship complete with mill certs and inspection reports, ground transit to south central Pennsylvania takes 4 to 5 business days and expedite air is always on the table when a line is waiting.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
The Parts York Industries Order Most
A sector-by-sector look at York Swiss turning demand.
Defense & Land Systems
York's defense economy is anchored by BAE Systems' combat vehicle operations, and the sub-tier suppliers feeding that program buy Swiss-turned hardware constantly. Locating pins, clevis pins, contact pins for vehicle electronics, hydraulic cartridge components and DFARS-compliant fasteners all fall inside our envelope. RivCut is DDTC registered and machines 4140, 4340, 17-4 PH and naval brass with full heat lot traceability, first article inspection reports and the document retention defense primes audit for.
Motorcycle & Heavy Vehicle
Harley-Davidson's York Vehicle Operations sits at the center of a regional powertrain and chassis supply chain, and vehicle programs consume exactly the geometry Swiss lathes excel at. Shoulder bolts, brake line fittings, dowel pins, axle spacers and sensor bosses run in our shop from 303 stainless, 12L14 and 4140, with live tooling cutting flats, cross holes and wrench features in the same setup. One operation per part keeps piece prices honest at 5,000 and 50,000 piece volumes alike.
HVAC, Hydro & Industrial Equipment
The York name is on chillers worldwide through Johnson Controls, and Voith Hydro runs its US hydropower headquarters in the city, so York County engineering teams spec an unusual range of fluid system components. Valve spools, orifice fittings, thermowells, probe bodies and instrumentation standoffs suit Swiss turning down to 0.020 inch stock, and length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 stay straight thanks to guide bushing support. We hold ±0.0001 inch diameters on the sealing surfaces that make or break a hydraulic assembly.
