What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
From Triangle Prototype to Production Run
The economics of a turned part change three times on its way through the Research Triangle. A device startup out of First Flight Venture Center or an NC State lab needs two or three luer fittings machined without a setup penalty. A funded program at the BD manufacturing operation in RTP or a Curtiss-Wright defense line in Raleigh needs the same geometry at hundreds per month with process capability data. At full production the question becomes cycle time, because a bar fed Swiss lathe with live tooling and a sub-spindle finishes a complete part in one handling while a conventional lathe needs three operations and two chances to lose concentricity.
RivCut quotes all three stages from our Union City, California shop with no minimum order quantity on one end and 100,000 plus piece bar runs on the other. The same machine, program and inspection plan carry a Raleigh part from validation build to blanket order, so the dimensions your contract manufacturer measures at scale match the first articles your team approved. Ground transit to North Carolina runs about 4 to 5 business days, with air freight available when a clinical build or a Fort Liberty program office is waiting.

Single-Setup Completion
Multi-axis live tooling and sub-spindles handle turning, off-center milling, cross-drilling, hex broaching, and thread whirling with zero secondary setups.
Superior Ra 16 Surface Finish
Rigid guide bushing support eliminates chatter and micro-vibration, consistently producing mirror-smooth Ra 16 µin (0.4 µm) turned surfaces as-machined.
Lights-Out Production Savings
Automatic bar feeders and continuous chip management allow 24/7 un-attended operation, dramatically lowering unit costs for mid-to-high volume orders.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
Swiss Machining Demand Across Raleigh
How demand for small turned parts breaks down across Raleigh.
Medical Devices & Biotech
BD builds injection and infusion devices in Research Triangle Park, Duke University Medical Center and UNC Health run the clinical trials, and the startups spinning out of NC State biomedical engineering fill the space between them. All of that work consumes Swiss turned hardware: luer fittings, cannulae, plunger tips, electrode bodies and bone screws in 316L, titanium and PEEK. RivCut turns them under 0.5 inch diameter with Ra 16 microinch finishes as machined and full material traceability, and our DFM feedback helps early stage teams lock a tolerance scheme before scale up.
Defense & Mission Systems
Raleigh's defense corridor answers to Fort Liberty and the Army's Special Operations Command, with Collins Aerospace avionics work and Curtiss-Wright defense electronics anchoring the industrial side. Special Operations equipment iterates fast, which favors a supplier who can Swiss turn contact pins, connector bodies and threaded standoffs in prototype lots one week and hold the same prints on a production release the next. RivCut supports Triangle defense programs with ITAR-controlled manufacturing capability, DFARS-aware material sourcing and first article inspection reports on request.
Semiconductor & Power Electronics
Wolfspeed's silicon carbide operations in Durham and IBM's packaging research in Research Triangle Park keep a steady flow of test fixtures, probe hardware and equipment spares moving through Triangle purchasing departments. Swiss geometry fits this niche well: gauge pins, precision dowels, vacuum fittings and slender ceramic-handling shafts at length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1, held to 0.0002 inch TIR so a probe lands where the layout says it will. We machine them in 303 and 316 stainless, copper alloys and Vespel, in the 5 to 50 piece lots that fab support work actually orders.
