What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
Watch City Standards, Applied to Modern Waltham Programs
Institutions shape what Waltham buys. Brandeis University and Bentley University feed graduates into a city where Thermo Fisher Scientific and Fresenius Medical Care North America run their headquarters, Repligen builds bioprocessing systems and Boston Dynamics teaches robots to walk. Every one of those organizations, and the startup layer around them, consumes small turned components in volumes that a job shop mill cannot touch: electrode pins for analytical instruments, luer fittings for fluid paths, gold plated contact pins for robot connectors and dowels for actuator assemblies.
The deeper story is that Waltham invented this category of work. The Waltham Watch Company built the first machines that turned watch parts interchangeably in the 1850s, a legacy the Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation still documents on Moody Street. Swiss type lathes are the direct descendants of that watchmaking tradition, a sliding headstock feeding bar through a guide bushing so the tool always cuts next to the support. That geometry is why a 3 inch long shaft at 0.125 inch diameter comes off straight instead of tapered.
RivCut runs that work from our Union City, California shop and ships it east. Ground transit to Massachusetts takes 4 to 5 business days, air freight lands next day and every lot arrives with mill certs and inspection data the Route 128 documentation culture expects. No minimum order, from a 5 piece Brandeis lab fixture run to 50,000 bar fed connector pins.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
Where Swiss Machining Fits in Waltham
From prototypes to bar-fed production, this is Waltham's Swiss workload.
Medical Devices & Life Science Instrumentation
Waltham is one of the densest life science headquarters clusters in the country. Thermo Fisher Scientific runs its corporate base here, Fresenius Medical Care North America manages its dialysis business from Waltham and Repligen ships bioprocessing hardware worldwide. The engineers inside and around those companies buy exactly what Swiss lathes make best: cannulated bone screws, luer fittings, electrode bodies, PEEK insulators and valve components under 0.5 inches in diameter. We turn them from 316L, titanium and implant adjacent polymers with Ra 16 microinch finishes as machined and full lot traceability.
Robotics & Automation
Boston Dynamics headquarters sits in Waltham, and the surrounding corridor hosts dozens of robotics and automation teams spun out of Greater Boston engineering programs. Robots are dense with Swiss scale hardware: contact pins and connector shells for high cycle interconnects, slender drive shafts, precision dowels, standoffs and sensor housings that must hold concentricity through thousands of hours of vibration. Live tooling and sub spindle work let us finish these parts complete in one setup, with cross holes, flats and threads done before the part leaves the machine.
Defense & Aerospace Electronics
Raytheon anchored its corporate headquarters in Waltham for decades, and the Route 128 defense corridor it helped build still surrounds the city with radar, guidance and secure communications programs. That work runs on turned interconnect and RF hardware: gold plated contact pins, ferrules, coaxial center conductors, hermetic feedthrough bodies and fuel system fittings machined to drawings with real tolerance stacks. We hold diameters to ±0.0001 inches and concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR, with first article inspection reports and material certs on every defense lot.
