What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
Swiss Turned Parts for the San Jose Equipment Supply Chain
The dominant cluster in San Jose manufacturing is semiconductor capital equipment. Applied Materials in Santa Clara, Lam Research in Fremont and KLA in Milpitas ring the city, and every etch chamber, deposition tool and metrology platform they ship carries thousands of small turned components: gas line fittings, precision dowels, feedthrough bodies, contact pins in the wafer handling and probe paths. When a fab tool is down, those parts are needed in days, and most South Bay machine shops are already booked solid on OEM contracts.
Swiss turning fits this supply chain because the guide bushing supports the bar directly at the cut. A 316L gas fitting with a 0.062 inch through bore comes off concentric to 0.0002 inches TIR, and an electropolish-ready Ra 16 microinch as machined finish means chamber components spend less time in secondary processing. Live tooling and a sub spindle finish cross holes, flats and back-side features in one setup, which is how a 5,000 piece connector pin run stays identical from first bar to last.
Aerospace and medical round out the demand. Lockheed Martin Space in Sunnyvale and Northrop Grumman mission systems in San Jose consume turned flight hardware with ITAR and AS9102 paperwork attached, while Intuitive Surgical's robotic surgery programs and the startups orbiting them buy exactly the micro shafts and instrument components Swiss lathes were built for. RivCut serves all of it from Union City, close enough that ground shipping to San Jose is typically next business day.

From single medical prototypes to automated 100,000+ piece production runs — built for zero defect manufacturing.
±0.0001" Micro Tolerance
Holding ultra-precise concentricity, diameter, and thread pitch tolerances on slender pins, shafts, and medical implants where standard lathes fail.
Single-Setup Completion
Multi-axis live tooling and sub-spindles handle turning, off-center milling, cross-drilling, hex broaching, and thread whirling with zero secondary setups.
Superior Ra 16 Surface Finish
Rigid guide bushing support eliminates chatter and micro-vibration, consistently producing mirror-smooth Ra 16 µin (0.4 µm) turned surfaces as-machined.
Lights-Out Production Savings
Automatic bar feeders and continuous chip management allow 24/7 un-attended operation, dramatically lowering unit costs for mid-to-high volume orders.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
How San Jose Industries Use Swiss Turned Parts
Three local sectors, three very different turned parts. Here is what we machine for San Jose teams.
Semiconductor Capital Equipment
Equipment programs at Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA flow down to a component supply base that machines to ultra-clean standards on unforgiving schedules. RivCut Swiss turns gas delivery fittings, VCR gland bodies, precision dowel pins and probe contact pins from 316L, 6061 and PTFE-compatible alloys with full heat lot traceability, cleanliness call-outs honored per drawing and cleanroom-compatible packaging on request. Bar fed runs from 500 to 100,000 plus pieces keep spares bins full between tool installs.
Aerospace & Defense
Satellite and mission systems work at Lockheed Martin Space in Sunnyvale and Northrop Grumman in San Jose pushes turned hardware requirements down to Tier 2 suppliers: connector pins, fuel and pneumatic fittings, sensor housings and slender actuator shafts with L/D ratios past 20 to 1. We machine 303 stainless, Ti-6Al-4V, 2024 and 7075 with DDTC registration in place, AS9102 first article reports on request and MIL-spec finish call-outs routed to qualified processors.
Medical Devices & Surgical Robotics
Intuitive Surgical's da Vinci platform made the South Bay the center of surgical robotics, and the instrument side of that industry is Swiss lathe territory: wristed instrument shafts under 0.35 inches in diameter, cannulated pins, luer fittings, electrode bodies and PEEK insulators. RivCut turns titanium, 17-4 PH, 316L and PEEK with the material certs and CMM reports device startups need from the first prototype, at no minimum order quantity, so a 10 piece validation batch is a normal job.
