Swiss CNC Machining
in Mesa, AZ

Mesa's east side is one of the densest rotorcraft supply chains in the country, and every Apache and MD 500 that rolls out of Falcon Field carries thousands of small turned components. RivCut Swiss machines the clevis pins, hydraulic fittings, valve spools and sensor housings that Mesa aerospace, defense and medical device teams spec, holding ±0.0001 inch tolerances on bar stock from 0.020 to 1.50 inches, shipped from California in one to two days by ground.

What Is Swiss CNC Machining?

Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.

1

Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing

The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.

2

Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis

Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.

3

Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining

Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.

Feeding the Falcon Field Supply Chain

Start with the cluster. Boeing builds the AH-64 Apache at its Mesa plant beside Falcon Field Airport, MD Helicopters assembles its light single line a short taxi away and Northrop Grumman and Gulfstream both maintain operations in the city. Around those primes sits a tiered network of machine shops, harness houses and MRO providers, and it is that supply chain, not the primes themselves, that buys the most Swiss work. Rotor head hardware, servo valve spools, fuel system fittings and instrumentation pins are all under 1.5 inches in diameter, all tolerance critical and all consumed in bar-fed quantities.

The city's growth has stacked new demand on top of the rotorcraft base. Dexcom manufactures continuous glucose monitors in Mesa, EV and aerospace suppliers keep landing in the Elliot Road and Gateway corridors and ASU's Polytechnic campus near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport turns out engineers who prototype first and scale later. Those programs need micro turned parts too: cannulated components, connector contacts, luer fittings and slender sensor shafts that a guide bushing lathe produces straight and concentric where a conventional lathe cannot.

RivCut serves Mesa from our Union City, California shop. Sliding headstock lathes with live tooling and sub-spindles finish parts complete in one setup, there is no minimum order and bar-fed runs scale from 500 to 100,000 plus pieces. Ground freight reaches Arizona in about one to two business days, so a Mesa buyer can treat us like a shop across town with a deeper machine roster.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts

Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.

1. Precision Ground Bar Stock

Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.

2. Thread Relief Grooves

Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.

3. Corner Radii & Chamfers

Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.

How Mesa Industries Use Swiss Turned Parts

Three local sectors, three very different turned parts. Here is what we machine for Mesa teams.

Rotorcraft & Aerospace

Apache and MD 500 airframes concentrate small turned hardware: rotor system clevis pins, control rod terminals, hydraulic and fuel fittings and the valve spools inside flight control actuators. Suppliers feeding Boeing Mesa and MD Helicopters carry AS9100-style documentation expectations down to Tier 2 and Tier 3, so RivCut Swiss turns these parts from 7075 and 2024 aluminum, 303 and 17-4 PH stainless and Ti-6Al-4V with full material traceability, first article inspection reports and concentricity held to 0.0002 inches TIR.

Defense & Unmanned Systems

Northrop Grumman's Mesa presence and the wider Phoenix East Valley defense base generate steady orders for connector and interconnect hardware: gold plated contact pins, RF connector bodies, ferrules and standoffs in quantities that only a bar-fed Swiss lathe prices well. We run these ITAR-sensitive geometries from brass, beryllium copper, 303 stainless and aluminum, holding diameters to ±0.0001 inches so mating interfaces gauge correctly across every lot from the first thousand to the fifty thousandth piece.

Medical Devices

Dexcom's Mesa manufacturing site put the city on the medtech map, and device startups spinning out of ASU Polytechnic add a prototype layer underneath it. Swiss turning covers the micro end of that work: cannulated pins, luer fittings, electrode bodies, insertion needle hubs and PEEK insulators under 0.5 inches in diameter, finished near Ra 16 microinches as machined so most parts skip secondary polishing. Materials run 316L and 17-4 PH stainless, titanium, PEEK and Delrin, with lot traceability suitable for device history records.

Insider tip: If your part feeds an Apache, MD 500 or Dexcom program, flag the end use and any source-control drawing on the RFQ. Naming the program up front attaches the right documentation package and material pedigree to the first quote instead of forcing a requote after your quality team reviews it.

Swiss Machining FAQ for Mesa Buyers

Lead times, tolerances, materials and shipping for Mesa orders.

Yes. We turn clevis pins, terminals, spools and fittings from 7075, 2024, 303, 17-4 PH and Ti-6Al-4V with the documentation Tier 2 and Tier 3 rotorcraft suppliers need, including full mill certs and AS9102-style first article inspection reports on request.
Standard machining lead time is 5 to 10 business days depending on quantity and material, and ground transit from our California shop to Arizona adds only 1 to 2 business days. Expedited machining and air shipping are available when a line-down situation at Falcon Field cannot wait.
The guide bushing supports the bar at the point of cut, so we hold diameters to ±0.0001 inches, concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR and as-machined finishes near Ra 16 microinches. Length to diameter ratios over 20 to 1 come off straight, which matters for slender shafts and cannulated medical components.
No. We run single prototypes for ASU Polytechnic teams and East Valley startups, and we run bar-fed production from 500 into the tens of thousands for established aerospace and medical suppliers. Piece prices drop steeply once a job justifies dedicated bar stock and lights-out running.
RivCut is DDTC registered and set up for ITAR-controlled manufacturing, so connector pins, sensor housings and other export-controlled turned components for Mesa defense suppliers are handled under the required controls, with documentation to match.
Swiss CNC machining uses a sliding headstock lathe with a guide bushing. The bar stock feeds through the guide bushing past the cutting tool, providing rigid support directly next to the cut. This eliminates bar deflection and allows ultra-precise turning of long, thin or micro parts down to ±0.0001 inch tolerance.
We machine bar diameters from 0.020 in (0.5 mm) up to 1.50 in (38 mm). We specialize in micro-miniature parts, long slender shafts, medical bone screws, electrical contacts and valve spools.
