Swiss CNC Machining
in Green Bay, WI

Ask a Green Bay maintenance engineer what stops a converting line and the answer is rarely a big casting. It is a worn guide pin, a scored valve spool or a sensor housing that no longer seats. RivCut Swiss machines exactly those parts, turned from bar stock 0.020 to 1.50 inches in diameter to tolerances of ±0.0001 inches, shipped ground to Brown County in 3 to 4 business days.

What Is Swiss CNC Machining?

Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.

1

Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing

The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.

2

Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis

Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.

3

Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining

Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.

The Swiss Parts Green Bay Actually Buys

Start with the part types, because they tell the Green Bay story better than any industry label. Web guide pins, tension sensor housings, pneumatic valve spools, dancer roller shafts and threaded standoffs are the small turned components that converting equipment consumes by the thousand. Paper Converting Machine Company builds automated converting lines on the west side of town, and Georgia-Pacific and Procter & Gamble run some of the highest speed tissue and towel operations in the country along the Fox River. Every one of those machines is full of slender, concentric, bar turned hardware.

Food processing adds a second bill of materials. Schreiber Foods, one of the largest dairy processors anywhere, and the robotic packaging cells spreading through the region need 316L sanitary probe housings, fill nozzle components and washdown rated fittings that hold finish as well as dimension. Swiss turning fits this work because the guide bushing supports the bar at the point of cut, so a 3 inch long spool at 0.3 inch diameter comes off straight, with live tooling adding flats, cross holes and wrench features in the same setup.

Defense rounds out the demand. Oshkosh Defense builds JLTV and FMTV tactical vehicles 45 minutes south and Marinette Marine constructs naval vessels up the shoreline, and both programs pull machined connector pins, fuel system fittings and hardened small shafts through northeast Wisconsin supplier networks. RivCut runs this work from our Union City, CA shop and ships it to Wisconsin, ITAR registered, with certs attached.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts

Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.

1. Precision Ground Bar Stock

Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.

2. Thread Relief Grooves

Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.

3. Corner Radii & Chamfers

Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.

The Parts Green Bay Industries Order Most

A sector-by-sector look at Green Bay Swiss turning demand.

Paper, Packaging & Converting Machinery

Converting equipment from PCMC and the mill operations at Georgia-Pacific and Procter & Gamble run millions of cycles between rebuilds, and the turned components wear first. RivCut Swiss machines web guide pins, dancer shafts, pneumatic valve spools and proximity sensor housings from 17-4 PH, 440C and hardened 4140, holding concentricity to 0.0002 inches TIR so rollers track true at line speed. Length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 are routine with guide bushing support, which matters for the long slender shafts converting machinery favors.

Food & Dairy Processing Automation

Schreiber Foods and the food plants across the Fox Valley hold suppliers to sanitary design rules, which means crevice free geometry, 316L stainless and surface finishes that survive USDA washdown audits. Swiss turning delivers Ra 16 microinch finishes as machined, so probe bodies, fill nozzle tips, luer style sample fittings and ferrules often need no secondary polishing. We machine these with full material traceability and can quote electropolish as a finishing step when a spec calls for it.

Defense & Tactical Vehicle Supply

Oshkosh Defense JLTV and FMTV production and Fincantieri Marinette Marine shipbuilding create steady regional demand for small machined hardware with military documentation. RivCut turns electrical connector pins, contact pins, fuel fittings and hardened suspension related small shafts with Rockwell hardness verified after heat treat, first article inspection reports and EN 10204 3.1 mill certs. Wisconsin winter freight is a real risk on these programs, so we quote air shipping alongside ground for November through March deliveries.

Insider tip: If your part replaces a component on a running converting or packaging line, send the mating part dimensions along with the print. Matching the actual bore or journal it seats into, not just the nominal on an old drawing, is what makes a replacement pin or spool drop in on the first try.

Green Bay Buyer FAQ

Straight answers on Swiss work shipped to Green Bay.

Yes. Guide pins, valve spools, dancer shafts and sensor housings for converting lines are core Swiss lathe geometry. We work from a print, a STEP file or a worn sample part, and we hold the concentricity and straightness that web handling equipment demands, 0.0002 inches TIR with guide bushing support.
Machining runs 5 to 10 business days depending on material and quantity, then ground transit from our California shop to Wisconsin takes 3 to 4 business days. When a Fox River mill has a line down, expedited machining plus air freight cuts the door to door time roughly in half.
We turn 316L probe housings, fittings and nozzle components with Ra 16 microinch as machined finishes and crevice free features suited to 3-A style sanitary requirements, the kind of parts Schreiber Foods suppliers and Fox Valley food plants specify. Electropolishing is available as a quoted finishing operation.
Yes. RivCut is DDTC registered and ITAR controlled manufacturing capable. Connector pins, fuel fittings and hardened shafts for Oshkosh Defense or Marinette Marine program suppliers ship with material certs, first article reports and the process traceability those quality systems require.
No minimum. We run one off prototypes for hardware startups out of the Advance Business & Manufacturing Center and bar fed production runs of 500 to 100,000 plus pieces for equipment builders. Per piece pricing drops sharply once a job runs lights out on dedicated bar stock.
We machine bar diameters from 0.020 in (0.5 mm) up to 1.50 in (38 mm). We specialize in micro-miniature parts, long slender shafts, medical bone screws, electrical contacts and valve spools.
Yes. Our Swiss lathes feature up to 12 axes with live tooling and sub-spindles. We can turn, cross-drill, mill flats, cut keyways, thread-whirl and finish the back side of parts in a single machine cycle.
