What Is Swiss CNC Machining?
Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.
Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing
The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.
Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis
Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.
Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining
Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.
The Tri-Valley Supply Chain, Seen from Danville
Follow the I-680 corridor out of Danville in either direction and you hit the two poles of the Tri-Valley cluster. South and east, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories California anchor a dense web of precision suppliers building fixtures, diagnostics and experimental hardware to prints that tolerate nothing loose. North, Bishop Ranch in San Ramon houses corporate engineering groups and a growing bench of software-plus-hardware companies. Danville engineers, buyers and consultants work inside both supply chains, and the parts they source skew small, round and unforgiving.
That is Swiss lathe territory. A sliding headstock machine supports the bar in a guide bushing right at the cutting tool, so a 3 inch long pin at 0.125 inch diameter comes off straight, concentric within 0.0002 inches TIR and finished near Ra 16 microinches without a grinding operation. Live tooling and a sub-spindle finish cross holes, flats and back-side features in the same cycle, which matters when a lab fixture pin or a fluidic fitting has features on both ends.
Proximity is the quiet advantage. Our shop is in Union City, roughly 30 minutes over the hill, so first articles can be in a Danville reviewer's hands the day after they come off the machine, and production lots reach anywhere in California by next-day ground.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts
Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.
1. Precision Ground Bar Stock
Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.
2. Thread Relief Grooves
Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.
3. Corner Radii & Chamfers
Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.
How Danville Industries Use Swiss Turned Parts
Three local sectors, three very different turned parts. Here is what we machine for Danville teams.
National Lab & Defense Suppliers
Machine shops and integrators feeding Lawrence Livermore and Sandia programs order exactly the geometry Swiss lathes were built for: dowel-fit alignment pins, vacuum fitting bodies, electrode standoffs and instrumentation ferrules in 303, 316L and oxygen-free copper. These jobs arrive with tight prints and tighter paperwork. RivCut runs them with full material traceability, first article inspection reports and lot control, at quantities from 5 validation pieces to bar-fed thousands.
Medical Device & Life Science Instrumentation
The Pleasanton and Dublin side of the Tri-Valley carries a life science instrumentation cluster, with 10x Genomics the best known name, and Danville is home base for many of the engineers and program managers who feed it. Their instruments run on Swiss turned components: luer fittings, manifold nozzles, cannulated pins, PEEK insulators and 316L sensor housings under half an inch in diameter. We machine them burr free with as-machined finishes clean enough for fluid paths, no MOQ for pilot builds.
Corporate Engineering & Hardware Startups
Bishop Ranch and the wider I-680 corridor host corporate R&D groups, energy and utility engineering teams and founders who prototype from Danville home offices. Their bills of materials are full of small turned hardware nobody wants to babysit on a manual lathe: connector pins, contact pins, threaded standoffs, custom shafts and battery contact terminals. Swiss turning lets us quote a 25 piece prototype run and the 10,000 piece production follow-on off the same program, so the part that passed validation is the part that ships.
