What Is Swiss CNC Machining?

Swiss CNC machining (also known as Swiss screw machining or sliding headstock turning) feeds bar stock through a stationary guide bushing directly adjacent to the cutting tool. Because the material is supported right where the cut happens, deflection and vibration are eliminated — allowing ultra-tight tolerances, micro features, and length-to-diameter aspect ratios over 20:1 that conventional CNC lathes cannot achieve.

1

Bar Stock Feeds Through Guide Bushing

The raw bar feeds through a carbide-lined guide bushing, providing zero-clearance support right next to the cutting insert.

2

Sliding Headstock Moves Along Z-Axis

Instead of moving the cutting tool along the part, the headstock advances the bar past fixed gang tooling, maintaining maximum rigidity.

3

Live Tooling & Sub-Spindle Dual Machining

Cross-milling, axial drilling, threads, and back-side features are completed in a single setup before parting off the finished part.

The Swiss Turned Parts Clovis Companies Order Most

Start with the parts list rather than the industry labels. Security and surveillance electronics, the sector Pelco built in Clovis over four decades, runs on turned hardware: contact pins and connector bodies for weatherproof camera interconnects, threaded standoffs for board stacking, lens retaining rings and small stainless sensor housings that seal to IP66. These are classic Swiss lathe parts, under an inch in diameter, high count per assembly and unforgiving on concentricity because a wobbling pin means an intermittent connection in the field.

Healthcare is the other volume buyer. Saint Agnes Medical Center and Clovis Community Medical Center anchor a large clinical base, and California Health Sciences University has pulled pharmacy and medical education into town, which feeds device trial work and lab instrumentation across the Fresno-Clovis metro. That work orders bone screws, luer fittings, electrode bodies and cannulated pins in 316L, titanium and PEEK, parts where a guide bushing supported cut and Ra 16 microinch finishes straight off the machine matter more than any milling capability.

Then there is the equipment economy underneath everything, ag machinery, irrigation and food processing lines serving the surrounding Valley, plus fabricators like Anlin Windows and Doors running high volume production tooling. Their maintenance and OEM orders skew toward hydraulic valve spools, spray nozzle bodies, slender drive shafts and hardened wear pins, often reverse engineered from a worn sample. Ground freight from our Union City shop reaches Clovis in about one business day, so a Monday order can be cutting Tuesday and on a receiving dock the same week.

DFM Tips for Swiss Turned Parts

Optimize your 3D CAD models and drawings for maximum Swiss machining efficiency.

1. Precision Ground Bar Stock

Because the bar slides through a guide bushing, use h8 diameter tolerance precision ground bar stock to prevent binding or loose play.

2. Thread Relief Grooves

Provide a thread relief necking groove at thread shoulders (minimum 1.5x thread pitch) to allow clean single-point thread tool retraction.

3. Corner Radii & Chamfers

Specify internal corner radii of at least R 0.010" (0.25 mm) and external 45° lead-in chamfers to ease automated tool engagement and deburring.

The Parts Clovis Industries Order Most

A sector-by-sector look at Clovis Swiss turning demand.

Security Electronics & Sensors

The engineering talent Pelco concentrated in Clovis seeded a metro wide base of camera, sensor and connected hardware work, and that hardware consumes micro turned metal. RivCut Swiss machines gold platable brass and phosphor bronze contact pins, machined connector shells, EMI shield ferrules and 303 stainless sensor housings with live tooling flats and cross holes cut in the same setup. Concentricity holds to 0.0002 inch TIR, which is what keeps a pin engaging its socket after a thousand mating cycles outdoors.

Medical & Health Sciences

Between Saint Agnes Medical Center, Clovis Community Medical Center and the health programs at California Health Sciences University, the Fresno-Clovis metro supports device developers, lab instrumentation builders and clinical research teams that prototype in small turned components. We run bone screws and cannulated pins in Ti-6Al-4V, luer fittings and electrode bodies in 316L and PEEK insulators under half an inch in diameter, with full material traceability and no minimum order, so a single prototype set is a normal job, not an exception.

Ag Equipment & Food Processing

The farm equipment dealers, irrigation suppliers and food processing plants around Clovis wear out small precision components on a schedule the harvest does not negotiate. Valve spools, spray nozzle bodies, gauge pins, drive shafts with length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 and hardened wear bushings all fit Swiss lathe geometry. We machine them in 17-4 PH, 4140, 440C and bronze, frequently working from a sample part and a sketch when the OEM number is obsolete or six weeks out.

Insider tip: If your part replaces a worn component on ag or processing equipment, ship us the used sample along with your sketch. Measuring the unworn surfaces of a real part resolves fits faster than a dimension pulled from a corroded diameter, and it usually saves a revision on the first article.

Clovis Buyer FAQ

Straight answers on Swiss work shipped to Clovis.

Faster than almost anywhere we ship. Machining runs 5 to 10 business days depending on quantity and material, and ground transit from our Union City shop to Clovis is about one business day. When a processing line is down during harvest, expedited machining plus overnight shipping compresses the whole cycle.
Yes, that is core Swiss work. We turn contact pins in brass and phosphor bronze ready for gold plating, connector shells with cross holes and flats cut in one setup and 303 stainless housings sealed for outdoor duty. Concentricity holds to 0.0002 inch TIR so pins engage cleanly across repeated mating cycles.
We Swiss machine bone screws, cannulated pins, luer fittings and electrode bodies in 316L, Ti-6Al-4V and PEEK with material certs and first article inspection reports on request. Prototype sets for research and trial work run with no minimum order, and validated designs scale onto bar fed production.
Guide bushing support at the cut lets us hold diameters to ±0.0001 inch, concentricity to 0.0002 inch TIR and surface finishes near Ra 16 microinches as machined. Long slender geometry stays straight too, with length to diameter ratios past 20 to 1 coming off the machine without taper.
No minimum. One reverse engineered replacement spool for an ag equipment rebuild is a real order, and so is a 50,000 piece bar fed run of contact pins. Piece price drops steeply once quantity justifies dedicated bar stock and lights out running, which we quote automatically at multiple volume breaks.
We machine bar diameters from 0.020 in (0.5 mm) up to 1.50 in (38 mm). We specialize in micro-miniature parts, long slender shafts, medical bone screws, electrical contacts and valve spools.
Yes. Our Swiss lathes feature up to 12 axes with live tooling and sub-spindles. We can turn, cross-drill, mill flats, cut keyways, thread-whirl and finish the back side of parts in a single machine cycle.
